Kim Leine, one of the most looked-to contemporary Nordic voices, joins American writer Simon Winchester, who has been avidly exploring the Arctic since 1965, at NYPL. Leine, author of Prophets of Eternal Fjord, the internationally best-selling saga of a Greenlandic community torn apart by the forces of colonialism, is the winner of the Nordic Council Literature Prize. The World English rights to his latest novel Red Man/Black Man have recently been sold to publisher Ravi Mirchandani, Picador/Pan Macmillan for publication.

News ARCTIC IMAGINATION THE BOOK
The Arctic Imagination project concludes with a book consisting of spectacular material from the library collections as well as newly commissioned texts from artist Laurie Anderson (US), author Kim Leine (NO/DK), photographer Henrik Saxgren (DK), and author Sørine Steenholdt (GL). Together the historical material and contemporary reflections on the Arctic sum up transatlantic brainstorm that the libraries initiated last year.

Experience the full conversation from New York Public Library between Martin Breum and Naomi Klein. Naomi Klein’s 2015 book This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate argued that massively reducing our greenhouse emissions is our best chance to simultaneously reduce gaping inequalities, re-imagine our broken democracies, and rebuild our gutted local economies. She will participate in Arctic Imagination together with the Danish journalist Martin Breum, who has a sound knowledge of Greenland and the Arctic, which he has explored in his books The Greenland Dilemma and When the Ice Disappears.

Event Varna (GL) in Arctic Imagination
Experience the premiere of Varna in Arctic Imagination. Central Library of Greenland has commissioned work by one of Greenland’s most talented composers; Varna Marianne Nielsen Apaloo. The composer has been granted complete artistic freedom to create a piece inspired by the Greenlandic landscape in relation to climate change. Apaloo mixes field recordings of calving icebergs, ice floes, gushing water, and sled dogs with the traditional Greenlandic drum singing. The work premiered at Greenland Institute of Natural Resources on the 18th of October as a part of Nuuk Nordic Arts- and Culture Festival.

Event Olafur Eliasson (IS/DK) & Minik Rosing (GL) full CONVERSATION
Experience the full conversation from New York Public Library between the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and the Greenlandic professor of geology Minik Rosing. The urgent tensions between humanity and Nature are ever-present in Eliasson’s work, whether in public installations such as The New York City Waterfalls and Ice Watch or in his Little Sun solar lamp project. He is joined on stage by Rosing, whose research spans themes ranging from the consequences of the presence of life for planet Earth to the relations between arts and sciences.
